Beaches
LET THE OCEAN LEAD THE WAY
Here at the North Coast, we are spoiled for choice when it comes to beaches and sea views. We’re proud to share that seven Northern Irish beaches ranked in the Top 50 for Best Beaches in the UK in the last year. Whether you’re in search of a gentle stroll to wind down for the evening, a fun-filled beach day with the whole family or an adventurous surf and dip, the North Coast has a beach for you. With the wild Atlantic on one side and the majestic Irish sea on the other, you’ll get your beach fix.
We have chosen some of our favourite beaches to help you choose. This is by no means an extensive list. Simply a little nudge in the right direction.
WEST STRAND, PORTRUSH
Of course, we had to start with our very own, West Strand beach. Here at DB Stays, this is our closest beach and what an incredible one to have on our doorstep! This beach hugs each side of the bustling Harbour here in Portrush. With easy access to shops, amusements for the kids and delicious, highly rated restaurants nearby, you have the perfect beach for a full day of joy. This beach is a blue flag beach, meaning it’s super safe for families. If you’re in search of a little adventure, this beach is also widely used by surfers from all over the world. Why not join them? Or if you haven’t yet had the chance to explore your inner surfer, contact Portrush Surf School for a few lessons and top of the range equipment that you can hire for the day.

BENONE BEACH
We think we can confidently say that Benone Beach could rival any Blue Flag beach in Europe. It really is seven miles of golden bliss. This beach is incredibly spacious and therefore is perfect for little kids (or little animals!) who want to run around and feel safe and free. It’s the perfect beach for a sand castle competition, followed by a family barbecue and a dip to cool off. If the weather is in your favour, you may get a chance to see breathtaking views of Binevenagh Mountain from the coastline.

WHITE ROCKS BEACH
If you’re spending a day driving the incredible Causeway Coastal route, this beach is the perfect stop to stretch the legs and bask in Northern Ireland’s natural magic. For those interested in the magic of nature and geology, you’ll find incredible views of Limestone cliffs that stretch the whole way from Curran Strand to Dunluce Castle. The thing we love most about this Blue Flag beach is that you can walk to it from Portrush along a perfect pathway of sand that runs from East Strand beach to here. There is also an incredible cliff path that allows visitors a chance to experience the views from a new level.

DOWNHILL BEACH
If you’re in search of mesmerising beauty, Downhill beach may be the spot for you. Another Blue Flag wonder, Downhill Beach is within the recognised Bineveagh Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Nearby you’ll discover glistening waterfalls, mountainous sand dunes and the picturesque view of Mussenden Temple. Mussenden Temple was built in 1785 and is part of the estate of Frederick Augustus Hervey. After you’ve enjoyed the magic of Downhill beach, why not take yourself up to see Mussenden Temple up close. Perched perfectly, on a cliff 120 feet high, you will get the most incredible photography of the North Coast from this spot. The temple is easily accessed with a carpark below.

EAST STRAND BEACH
We’ve highlighted the West Strand, now we just have to highlight the East Strand. This beach is perfect for outdoor activities to keep the kids and the adults entertained all year ‘round. For the walkers, take a stroll on the perfectly golden 2.5 kilometres of heaven, or take a walk on the pedestrian promenade without having to worry about your safety. You can also make your way to Whiterocks beach if you’re after a longer walk! Watersports are enjoyed all year around by locals and visitors alike and you’ll also find horse riding enjoyed by many on this beach. As well as this, you’ll have a perfect view of the world famous Royal Portrush Golf Course.

As we said, this is by no means an extensive list. You could spend a month exploring only the beaches in the North Coast and you’d never be disappointed! Of course, these beautiful spots are truly magical when the sun is shining, but if there’s any advice we can give you as residents of Northern Ireland, it’s that even if there’s a spot of rain, get on out there anyway. Grab your raincoat, your wellies and layer up.
You’ll still experience something truly magnificent!
